style="text-align: left;">A unique silk scarf to celebrate 20 years of artistic commitment.

A Co-Edition to Mark an Anniversary

To celebrate its 20th anniversary, the Ceysson & Bénétière gallery in Saint-Étienne is partnering with Maison Brochier Soieries for a first co-edition: a silk scarf created from an artwork by Claude Viallat.
While the two houses have collaborated for several years on textile creations, this project marks a new milestone: Brochier Soieries here as co-editor, fully affirming its role at the intersection of contemporary art and textile craftsmanship.

The Origins of the Project

The relationship between Cédric Brochier and Claude Viallat dates back to the 1990s, during an initial textile project initiated by the Réunion des Musées Nationaux. Several artists, including Aurélie Nemours and Pierre Buraglio, were commissioned at the time to create limited edition works.
Since then, Cédric Brochier’s interest in Viallat’s work has continued to grow. Building on previous collaborations with contemporary artists, notably Robert Combas, the idea emerged to develop a new textile project with the artist.
This project takes shape with the Ceysson & Bénétière gallery, a long-standing partner, on the occasion of a major exhibition held in Saint-Étienne from March 6 to May 23, 2026, retracing 60 years of Claude Viallat’s career, the first artist exhibited by the gallery in this city 20 years ago. It is within this context that the silk scarf is presented to the public.

Ceysson & Bénétière Gallery

Founded in 2004 in Saint-Étienne by Loïc Bénétière, François and Bernard Ceysson, Ceysson & Bénétière has established itself as a key player in the contemporary art scene. As early as 2005, the gallery dedicated its first publication to Claude Viallat and has continued to promote his work ever since. Today, the gallery also operates in Paris, Tokyo, New York, Geneva, Wandhaff (Luxembourg), Saint-Étienne, and Lyon.

Claude Viallat, the Painter of Repetition

Born in 1936 in Nîmes, where he still lives and works today, Claude Viallat is one of the founders of the Supports/Surfaces movement, which emerged in the 1970s. This artistic movement challenges the traditional components of painting—canvas, stretcher, brush—in order to explore their fundamental elements. Viallat developed a distinctive practice: working on unstretched canvases or industrial fabrics, he endlessly repeats a single abstract shape, resembling a small bone form, which has become his signature.

© Cyrille Cauvet

A Lyonnais Technique: Frame Printing

The silk scarf is printed in a limited edition at the Brochier workshop, located at the foot of the Croix-Rousse slopes in Lyon, using the traditional cadre à la lyonnaise technique. Invented in Lyon around 1920, this method—similar to screen printing—was long used by Lyon’s silk manufacturers. It still allows for prints of exceptional chromatic richness today. For this edition, the team worked directly from Claude Viallat’s original artwork, specially sent to the workshop. Five colors were selected by the colorists, requiring the creation of five separate frames.

An Exclusive Piece to Discover

A remarkable project to revive an exceptional Lyonnais textile heritage.

An Ambitious Heritage Restoration Project

In September 2024, Cédric Brochier launched an ambitious initiative: restoring a historic Jacquard mechanism discovered in the family home. To take on this challenge, he partnered with the associations Tissage Mattelon and Soierie Vivante, both dedicated to preserving Lyon’s textile expertise. The goal? To bring a Jacquard loom back into working order, once again producing figured silks—and to give new life to an iconic design by Raoul Dufy.

The Origins of the Project

The story begins in 2018, when Cédric Brochier acquired a hand loom dating from the 1840s, equipped with a simple 104-hook mechanism designed for weaving plain fabrics.
In 2024, a new ambition emerged: replacing this system with a 744-hook Jacquard mechanism inherited from Jacques Brochier. This transformation makes it possible to create complex patterns and marks a key milestone in showcasing textile heritage. The project reflects a clear vision: to present a fully operational production tool at the heart of the museum, while bringing to life Leaves, a design by Raoul Dufy.

A Technical and Human Challenge

Restoring the loom has required a wide range of rare skills. Each stage highlights the project’s complexity:
the manual threading of 6,400 silk threads, the preparation of the harness, the mounting of warp threads, and all the mechanical adjustments required for weaving. One of the greatest challenges lies in producing the Jacquard punch cards from Dufy’s design—a skill that has now almost disappeared in Europe. To overcome this, innovative solutions were developed: Mehdi Maleki created a dedicated software program for punching the cards, while Brochier Technologies handled the laser cutting of the 500 required cards and produced new needles using 3D printing. A remarkable combination of traditional craftsmanship and modern technology.

© André Chabert

Coming into Operation Soon

The project is now entering its final phase. Initial weaving tests in silk satin are underway, while the installation of the “card run” system—allowing the Jacquard cards to circulate through the mechanism—completes the setup.

From September onward, the restored loom will be fully operational.

A Living Experience to Discover
<p

Her arrival marks a new step in the development of the hand-painted silk workshops, with an approach that combines technical expertise and pedagogy, designed to adapt to each participant’s level.

A background bridging technique and creativity

Trained in textile innovation, Philippine has developed a strong command of finishing processes before joining Brochier Soieries as an apprentice screen printer and colourist. After several experiences in textile production, she has chosen to return to a more creative and human-centered approach to textiles, at the heart of the workshops.

An approach open to all

During the workshops, Philippine encourages a teaching style that leaves room for personal expression. Inspired in particular by Jean Cocteau and Japanese color harmonies, she guides each participant in discovering gestures and materials, regardless of their level.
But beyond these top attractions, a different side of the city reveals itself, one shaped by local habits, discreet addresses, and culinary treasures. If you want to truly explore Lyon in just one day, following the recommendations of locals is one of the most rewarding ways to discover its hidden gems.
At Brochier Soieries, our team shares their favorite places: a curated, food-focused walking tour through the hidden gems of Lyon.

Explore Lyon Like a Local: A Culinary Walking Tour

If you only have one day in Lyon, skip the rigid itinerary. Instead, follow the rhythm of the city, from terrace breakfasts to riverside aperitifs.
This alternative walking tour takes you from the Presqu’île to Croix-Rousse Hill, through the banks of the Rhône River and Saône River, and into the heart of neighborhoods where Lyonnais actually live, eat, and gather.
Along the way, you’ll pass near landmarks like the Musée des Beaux-Arts and Place des Terreaux, but the real experience happens just beyond them.

Morning Delights: Terrace Breakfasts and Market Rituals

Julie’s Favorite Things to Do in Lyon

Start your morning at Noze, 13 rue du Griffon, where the terrace offers a perfect vantage point over the Opéra. With a fresh croissant and coffee in hand, you can sightsee in the most relaxed way, watching Lyon wake up under soft morning light.
On weekends, head toward the Rhône for a stroll along Quai Augagneur. After browsing the local market, settle in at Café du Rhône, a historic café dating back to 1902. Its ceramic murals depicting Lyon’s landscapes are a quiet reminder of the city’s artistic heritage.
For a quick lunch near the Musée des Beaux-Arts and Brochier Soieries silk printing workshop, stop by Pâtes et Raviolis. Just behind Place des Terreaux, this hidden gem serves fresh, homemade pasta that rivals any Italian trattoria. Closer to Perrache, Mazzi offers a family-run experience: simple, authentic, and deeply comforting with fresh pastas cooked by big daddy!

Midday in Lyon: From Croix-Rousse to Riverside Terraces

Local Bistros and Relaxed Lunch Spots

At the foot of Croix-Rousse Hill, Albert stands out with its purple façade and intimate terrace. This is the kind of place Lyonnais love: seasonal cuisine, a warm atmosphere, and a true neighborhood spirit rooted in the historic silk workers’ district.
For something different, the terrace at Breizh Café Lyon is perfect for enjoying Breton galettes in the heart of the city.

For a relaxed lunch, Café 203 offers excellent value and a lively, local atmosphere, with terraces ideal for sunny days.
Nearby,
For a more traditional experience, Court Bouillon Lyon captures the essence of a chic Lyonnais bistro.
And at 5inq Mains, seasonal French cuisine is reimagined with creativity and warmth, making it one of the most unusual things to discover in this historic area.

Evening in Lyon: Rooftops, Wine, and Hidden Restaurants

Cédric Brochier’s Must-Visit Hidden Gems

As the day winds down, Lyon reveals another side: elegant, intimate, and deeply atmospheric.
Start with a glass of champagne at “Le Rooftop,” a discreet rooftop terrace on 11 rue du Bât d’Argent. It’s one of those hidden gems of Lyon that even many locals overlook.
For sunset, Botani Café offers spectacular views over the Rhône, with the Fourvière Basilica and the Grand Hôtel-Dieu as a backdrop.
Dinner options abound. Restaurant Théodore, located in Grand-Hôtel Dieu next to Brochier Soieries Museum, delivers a refined take on classic Lyonnais cuisine, a nod to the legacy of Paul Bocuse and the nearby Halles de Lyon Paul Bocuse.
For a more intimate setting, Arsëne is a hidden treasure — perfect for a romantic evening, with delicate cuisine and a cozy atmosphere.
Wine lovers should not miss Café Terroir, where traditional dishes like œufs meurette and escargots meet an exceptional wine selection.
Finally, Chez Hugon, 12 rue Pizay, remains one of the most authentic bouchons in Lyon — a place where generations of Brochier have gathered to celebrate true Lyonnais hospitality.
<div

It also connects Lyon to international cultural dialogues, making it a fascinating stop for families and curious minds alike.

Musée Soieries Brochier: Lyon’s living silk heritage

Lyon’s identity is inseparable from silk, a craft that shaped the city’s economy, architecture, and reputation for centuries. If you are wondering what should I see in Lyon to understand this heritage, a visit to the Musée Soieries Brochier is essential. The Brochier family has been weaving, printing, and innovating with silk since 1890, and today Maison Brochier Soieries remains one of the last silk houses still operating in the heart of the city. Within the workshop and museum, visitors can discover original printing techniques, admire collections that link Lyon’s past to contemporary design, and see firsthand how local artisans preserve this rare know-how. More than a museum, it is a living testimony to the artistry that made Lyon world-famous.

The Musée Soieries Brochier is located inside the Grand Hôtel-Dieu, one of Lyon’s most iconic landmarks. This historic building—once a hospital dating back to the Middle Ages and now beautifully restored—has become a vibrant hub of culture, gastronomy, and shopping. Exploring the Grand Hôtel-Dieu alongside the silk museum offers visitors two exceptional experiences in one, combining heritage, craftsmanship, and architectural beauty.

Les Nuits de Fourvière: Culture under the stars

One of the most magical times to Fourvière Hill. The program includes concerts, theater, dance, and cinema, featuring artists from around the world.

Experiencing a performance under the stars in a setting that combines Roman artifacts with contemporary creativity is unforgettable. For many visitors, it becomes the highlight of their Lyon itinerary.

Fête des Lumières: Lyon’s signature event

Another unmissable answer to what should I see in Lyon is the world-famous Fête des Lumières. Every December, the entire city is transformed into a glowing spectacle of light installations and artistic projections.

The festival originated in 1852, when the people of Lyon placed candles in their windows to honor the Virgin Mary. Today, it has grown into a major international event attracting millions of visitors. Landmarks such as the Hôtel de Ville, Place des Terreaux, and the stunning Notre Dame Basilica are illuminated in dazzling displays.

The Fête des Lumières is not only one of the most popular Lyon attractions but also a celebration of community and creativity.

Parc de la Tête d’Or and Lyon’s botanical gardens

For those who love green spaces, Within the park, you’ll find Lyon’s botanical gardens, home to thousands of plant species from around the world. It’s an oasis of calm, perfect for balancing a busy While Lyon is famous for its Renaissance beauty and gastronomy, it also has sites dedicated to memory and reflection. The Deportation History Center is one of the most poignant.

Located near the Rhône river, it commemorates victims of the Holocaust and highlights Lyon’s role in the French Resistance during World War II. Exhibits include testimonies, documents, and artifacts that make history tangible.

Visiting this site offers a deeper understanding of Lyon beyond its landmarks and ensures that history is never forgotten.

Everyday life in Lyon

To truly understand what you should see in Lyon, it’s worth experiencing daily life in the city. Stroll through Neighborhoods such as La Croix Rousse still echo with the legacy of silk workers, while East Lyon offers a glimpse of modern neighborhoods and cultural venues.

Walking through the So, what should I see in Lyon? The answer is as rich as the city itself. From the Roman ruins on Planning a trip to Lyon, the third largest city in France, often starts with one key question: when is the best time to visit Lyon? Located in central France, at the meeting point of the two rivers Saône and Rhône, Lyon is famous for its gastronomy, Roman ruins, and cultural festivals.

The truth is, there’s no single answer. Each season offers a unique perspective: from the lavender fields of southern France nearby in summer, to Spring is one of the best times to explore Lyon, thanks to its mild climate and public gardens in full bloom. Between March and May, the entire city awakens from winter hibernation. Days grow longer, the restaurants return to full swing, and the streets of Old Lyon are alive with students, tourists, and locals.

The Gardens Weekend, held at the end of May, offers access to private and public gardens that are exceptionally open to visitors, a true delight for nature and photography enthusiasts. These gardens can be explored in addition to the city’s many parks, including the
This season is also ideal for cultural discoveries and local craftsmanship, particularly through a <a

This period also corresponds to the low season, with fewer crowds and greater hotel availability than in summer. Walking or Raoul Dufy (1877-1953) was still struggling to make a living from his painting. He was particularly interested in the pedagogy and productions of the atelier “Martine”.
Together with Paul Poiret, he soon set up a printing workshop, La Petite Usine, in premises on Boulevard de Clichy.

The previous year, Dufy had produced woodcuts for Guillaume Apollinaire’s Le Bestiaire, whose primitivist, expressionist style had enthralled the couturier.

At Poiret’s suggestion, Dufy transposed the plates from his Bestiaire into motifs for printing on fabric. At his patron’s expense, he apprenticed as a textile designer.

In 1912, Lyon silk manufacturer Bianchini Férier offered Dufy a new collaboration, this time on an industrial scale. The firm offered him a golden bridge, guaranteeing him a minimum annual interest of seven thousand francs. Although no longer associated, Poiret and Dufy continued to work together from time to time.

In 2002, Cédric Brochier, grandson of Joseph Brochier, bought the Bianchini Férier silk house, whose archives include over 2,000 original textile drawings by Raoul Dufy.

Lyon is not just a city to be explored through its squares, riverside promenades, or famous traboules. It is also a city of memory, where history unfolds in captivating museums. From Roman times to the silk industry, and from the Resistance to the visionary urban projects of the 20th century, each museum reveals a facet of Lyon’s heritage. Here is a selection of key museums to help you understand the soul of the city.

Lugdunum – Museum and Roman Theatres

Perched on the Fourvière hill, the Lugdunum Museum takes visitors back to the days of antiquity. Founded in 43 BC, Lugdunum was the capital of Gaul and a major political center of the Roman Empire. The museum houses an impressive collection: delicate mosaics, monumental statues, everyday objects, and Latin inscriptions. Right next door, the remarkably preserved Roman theatres host the Nuits de Fourvière festival each summer. A visit that reminds us that Lyon was first born from a prosperous Roman city.

The Museum of the History of Lyon – Gadagne

Located in a magnificent Renaissance townhouse in Old Lyon, the Museum of the History of Lyon is an essential stop to understand the city’s evolution. Its collections recount the daily life of Lyon’s inhabitants since the Middle Ages: maps, paintings, handicrafts, and archival documents illustrate major urban and social transformations. As you walk through the galleries, it becomes clear why Lyon is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site: it is a city that has continuously reinvented itself while preserving its strong identity.

Brochier Silk Museum – A Living Heritage

While the Maison des Canuts and Soierie Vivante recount the past history of silk, the Brochier Silk Museum shows that this tradition is still very much alive. This family-run Lyon-based house, founded more than a century ago, continues to cultivate the unique expertise of silk printing. The museum showcases heritage collections, prestigious artistic collaborations with haute couture and renowned painters, as well as current research and innovation projects. Unlike places dedicated solely to memory, Brochier Soieries continues to produce and innovate, carrying the Lyon textile tradition into the present.

The Puppet Arts Museum – Gadagne

Also housed at Gadagne, another museum highlights an iconic figure of Lyon’s identity: Guignol. Created in the 19th century, this puppet has become a symbol of the city, embodying both rebellious humor and the voice of the people. The Puppet Arts Museum displays a unique collection of puppets from around the world, but Guignol takes center stage. Behind his wit and popularity lie the social realities and struggles of the Lyonnais of his time.

The Centre for the History of Resistance and Deportation (CHRD)

World War II left a profound mark on Lyon, which played a strategic role in the French Resistance. The CHRD, located in the former regional Gestapo headquarters, is a place of remembrance and transmission. Permanent exhibitions, archives, films, and personal accounts retrace the lives of resistance fighters as well as the suffering linked to deportation. The museum highlights emblematic figures like Jean Moulin while honoring the countless anonymous individuals who fought against occupation. A visit that is both moving and essential to understanding Lyon’s contemporary history.

Tony Garnier Urban Museum

Moving into the 20th century, the Tony Garnier Urban Museum pays tribute to one of France’s greatest architect-planners. Tony Garnier profoundly shaped Lyon with his visionary projects: the Halle Tony Garnier, the Grange Blanche hospital, and several workers’ housing estates. In the États-Unis district, this open-air museum features 25 monumental murals illustrating his work, along with a furnished model apartment from the 1930s. A visit that sheds light on another dimension of Lyon’s history: modernity and social progress.

Lyon, a City Always in Motion

From the Roman mosaics of Lugdunum to the contemporary silks of Brochier Soieries, from the Canuts of Croix-Rousse to the shadows of the Resistance, these museums reveal the richness of Lyon’s history. Exploring them means understanding how Lyon became a city of heritage, innovation, and collective memory, where past and present constantly engage in dialogue.
<p
