Available in 9090 cm silk squares, 60160 cm chiffon stoles with satin silk bands, and silkies.

These artworks complement Brochier Soieries’ Art Nouveau collection, which also features works by Tiffany, Klimt, Vallotton, and Mackintosh.

Within Brochier Soieries, Cédric Brochier collaborates with numerous contemporary artists, alongside emerging designers and renowned couturiers such as Elisabeth de Senneville, Christine Phung, and Hervé Léger.

Fashion designer Olivier Lapidus is passionate about new technologies. It takes little to convince Cédric to experiment with the production of new materials. The two men develop several concepts that blend fashion and technology: dresses made from lyophilized silk particles propelled onto the body, 3D woven dresses without seams. The wedding dress with Jacquard patterns using optical fibers presented during the spring-summer 2000 haute couture fashion show was a sensation. The technological research on weaving optical fiber led to the patenting of the Lightex® process in 2003.

In 2014, Thierry Mugler approached Brochier Technologies to create his luminous dress featured in the advertisement for the Alien perfume.

The Bilicocoon® now treats newborns in Canberra

Brochier Technologies’ initial research focuses on the field of health and therapeutic devices based on light. Among other developments, the team created a phototherapeutic device, the Bilicocoon®, the first illuminated sleeping bag facilitating the treatment of neonatal jaundice.

The neonatology department at the Women’s and Children’s Hospital in Canberra is organizing a home phototherapy program for 2024 with the aim of reducing hospital readmissions and improving the experience of parents with newborns affected by infant jaundice requiring phototherapy treatment.

Among the benefits of home treatment are the prevention of separation anxiety between mother and child and the ability to breastfeed in a comfortable home environment.

Silk weaving is the art of crossing silk threads vertically and horizontally. The weave of the fabric defines the mode of interlacing the warp and weft threads. There are many types of weaves such as plain, twill, and satin, each containing a multitude of combinations.

Operated using punched cards, the Jacquard mechanism allows each warp thread of the loom to be raised or lowered independently of all others. It operates on the same principle as a barrel organ. A hole in the card causes the thread to rise. No hole, the thread remains in place. This is the binary language invented by the Lyonnais Joseph Marie, known as “Jacquard,” in 1801, the ancestor of computer language.

The Jacquard mechanism has been at the heart of innovations developed by the Brochier family. Today, it remains an indispensable tool for modern, mechanized, and computerized looms.

Brochier Soieries now owns one of the largest single-thread looms, individually controlling 18,700 threads thanks to its Jacquard mechanism.

In 1890, fueled by a profession in full effervescence, Jean Brochier launched the Lyon silk house Brochier Soieries. A true conductor of all the essential know-how for the realization of silks, he created fabric collections, financed silk purchases, had the threads spun, dyed, and engraved. He provided work, raw materials, and patterns to weavers and printers and ensured the sale of fabrics to customers.

The ancient history of Lyon silk is intimately linked to kings: Charles VII, François I, Henri IV, Louis XIV, and then Napoleon I all ardently contributed to the development of the silk industry in Lyon.

In the 15th century, Lyon became an important center of European trade. King Charles VII granted the city the right to organize several tax-free fairs. Among other goods, many silks from Italy were sold there.

King François I supported and encouraged the establishment of the first two Italian weavers in Lyon. Privileges concerning the production of gold, silver, and silk fabrics were granted to them, allowing them to attract the best foreign workers. The activity quickly prospered.

The Wars of Religion broke out, and major merchants and manufacturers left the city. Workers, lacking work, joined competing Italian cities. The high taxation on the import of raw silk by King Charles IX led to a significant loss of competitiveness. The activity declined.

King Henri IV revived the silk industry by encouraging and supporting the development of silkworm breeding, particularly in the Cévennes and Ardèche regions. Meanwhile, techniques evolved: Claude Dangon imported and improved the “grande tire” loom, which now allowed the production of beautiful fabrics in a large width.

During the reign of King Louis XIV, Colbert rigorously regulated the profession: the Lyon fabric organized all those involved in weaving from 1667. It specified the quality of productions and the organization of an original production model. Orders for gold and silver brocades to furnish various royal residences poured in. Lyon merchants exported throughout Europe the innovations they created for the fashion of Versailles and Paris. Collections with original patterns quickly followed, leaving behind Italian, English, or Dutch competition struggling to keep up with the pace set by Lyon silk manufacturers.

The French Revolution dealt a severe blow to the Lyon fabric, but Napoleon I vigorously revived the sector with very important orders destined, among others, for the Tuileries Palace and the Fontainebleau Palace, and encouraged official elites to wear silk. The Jacquard loom, once developed by Joseph Marie Jacquard in Lyon, was very successful and quickly replaced the draw looms. It allowed for significant time savings and the weaving of much more complex patterns, although the selling price remained very high.

In the 19th century, the upheaval of social structures saw the rise of the bourgeoisie, who, like the nobility, wanted to dress in silk. Lyon silk then reached its peak. It became the most powerful French export industry and outperformed all other silk industries in Europe.

Lyon became the world capital of silk.

History of Maison Brochier, from Silk to Haute Couture

At the turn of the 1880s, the emergence of haute couture and the arrival of new materials prompted silk manufacturers to once again reinvent their profession.

Employed by Lyon silk manufacturers, Jean Brochier started his own business in 1890 and founded Maison Brochier, leveraging his knowledge of the factory’s operations. He produced “novelty” fabrics that were then sold to wholesalers and specialized department stores.

After four years of military service and four years of mobilization during the 1914-1918 war, Joseph Brochier, son of Jean, took over the family business J. Brochier & Fils, which he expanded and focused on fabrics known as “high novelty.” He became a supplier to leading couturiers such as Jean Patou, Jeanne Lanvin, and Gabrielle Chanel.

Joseph was at the heart of a couture industry where 350,000 workers and 150,000 accessory artisans were employed. The atmosphere of the Roaring Twenties was euphoric. Women were becoming more emancipated. While their daytime attire shortened and simplified, eveningwear became more extravagant. These were the changes that silk manufacturers had to anticipate and stay ahead of.

Soon, collections were exported internationally, and offices were opened in London, New York, Sydney, and Melbourne.
